Welcome to Lake Toxaway, NC

Lake Toxaway, NC is a highly desirable location for people seeking a vacation getaway, summer home, or a paradise to retire to. This unincorporated community is situated along the banks of Lake Toxaway in Transylvania County just north of the South Carolina border along US Highway 64. Set at an elevation of 2,979 feet, the surrounding mountains, rivers, and waterfalls offer residents gorgeous scenery, ample fresh air, incredible outdoor recreation opportunities, and a welcoming community. The elevation also contributes to a lovely climate, with average summer temperatures in the 70s and a blend of abundant sunshine and plentiful rain which contributes to the lush, verdant forests and vegetation.

The “Switzerland of America”

Lake Toxaway is a man-made lake, originally created and filled by E.H. Jennings in 1902 by building dams to contain nearby streams and rivers. Seeing the beauty of the area, he wanted to turn the area into a resort location. Southern Railway constructed a line from Asheville and The Toxaway Inn was built on the edge of the lake with the modern conveniences of the time - central heat, private indoor plumbing, and elevators. The wealthiest families of the era were frequent guests of the area, including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, John D. Rockefeller, and the Vanderbilts.

However, in 1916, just 13 years after opening, severe flooding caused the dam to burst, sending over 5 billion gallons of water down Toxaway Falls into South Carolina. The loss of Lake Toxaway and the damage to the area shut down tourism and after standing vacant for over 30 years, it was demolished in 1947.

Fortunately, in the 1960s, investors formed the Lake Toxaway Company to restore the area beyond its former glory. Today, it’s back to being the largest private lake in North Carolina, and development around the area has turned Lake Toxaway into a thriving community!
